What is a Spelling Competition?
A spelling competition is an event where a student is given an English word, and then they must spell that word correctly.
Part of our competition is written--students will write the spelling words their teacher says.
Part of our competition is oral--students will be told a word and they must spell it correctly out loud.
Local rounds are written spelling tests.
Regional rounds are half written and half oral.
The National round is only oral.

Why Should I do a Spelling Competition?
English is NOT a phonetic language.
This means that the sounds you make to say a word are not represented by one letter.
Look at this word: Solution. You do not read it as so-luht-e-on. You read it as sol-oo-shun.
It can make writing words correctly and reading them correctly difficult if you do not practice rules for how to write and read English words. A spelling competition helps students study different rules for English words so they become better readers and better writers!
Teachers can register their schools for the competition by completing the registration form below!
Registration to hold a local round and participate in the regional and national rounds closes on January 26
