How Do Local Rounds Work?
Who?
The National English Spelling Competition has two tiers of competitors.
Junior NESC Competitors - 6-8 class
Senior NESC Competitors - 9-12 class
The local Round determines the top 2 winners for each tier at your school.
The top 2 winners from each tier of the Local Round in your school are invited to the Regional Round.

where?
Your local school must register on the NESC website to host a NESC Local Round.
Local rounds are held by English teachers of the school in their school or a community center.
Each school will conduct the Local Round written spelling test on a date of their choice and at a time of their choice.

How?
The registered school’s English teacher(s) will host the Local Round of the NESC competition at their school. NESC will publish a Local Round Word List of 200 words for students to study and learn, and teachers can help!
The teacher(s) will have 8 days to hold a local round and can select a date and time that works best for their school.
The teachers will give the Local Round test orally and students will write the words. There will be 50 words from the local round spelling list and 5 Tiebreaker words. The Tiebreaker words are multiple choice from a definition that the teacher gives to students. The 50 word and 5 tiebreakers test will be sent to teachers of registered schools on the 27th of January via email.

What Happens Next?
After the written test is finished, the teacher(s) grade the tests. The top 2 scores from Junior NESC and the top two scores from Senior NESC will be invited to the Regional Round. Teachers will complete a Regional Qualification Form and a Certificate and Score form to report their local round results. Once the forms are submitted to NESC, the teacher and winning students will be contacted with more information about the Regional Round. All students, teachers and schools that participate and have their information on the Certificate and Scoring Form will receive a certificate via their local Resource Center, distributed in March and April.

Why should we participate?
NESC is a great opportunity for students to practice new words and memorize them. They will also have better reading skills from learning how to spell and make certain English word sounds.
NESC also has based its competition lists on IELTS, TOEFL and the American Scripps spelling Bee word list, so the words students are learning are useful for their future in English studies!
Teachers who work with Peace Corps volunteers can receive a 0.5 credit point for hosting a Local Competition! Teachers who do not have Peace Corps volunteers can click here for others ways to earn credit points for participating in NESC!

How Do Regional Rounds Work?
Who?
Regional Rounds are for Junior NESC and Senior NESC Competitors.
Each school that hosts a Local Round may invite their top 2 Senior and top 2 Junior NESC Competitors to the Regional Round.

How?

For each tier, the top 10 written scores will be invited to an oral round.
The oral round will be conducted like the national competition, with students spelling words until they get one incorrect, in which case they are eliminated.

The final 2 Junior NESC Competitors will be given prizes and crowned winners of that Region’s NESC Junior Competition.
The final 2 Senior NESC Competitors will receive prizes and will be invited to the National Round of competition.

Why Should We Participate?
Students that compete in the Junior NESC Competition will get excellent practice for a future National competition. They will also have the chance to receive a nice prize, and will get a certificate for participation even if they do not win.
Senior NESC Competitors will receive a nice price and be invited to a prestigious National Round. They will get to stay overnight in Tbilisi with special events and activities designed for them to have fun and meet new people. They will also have a chance to win MORE prizes!
Teachers who prepare students for The National English Spelling Competition can get up to 0.50 credit point under the new Teacher Professional Development Scheme. Teachers who are Regional Coordinators will get a chance for 2.00 additional credit points!

How Does the National Round Work?
Who?
The national round is for Senior NESC Competitors.
2 will be invited from each region to compete for first and second place grand prizes at the National Round.

Where?
The National Round is held in Tbilisi at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University.

How?
Students will arrive in Tbilisi Thursday before the competition and receive training on the national round format.
There will also be fun activities planned for them. All meals, transport and activities will be paid for.
On Friday, students will compete in on stage in 3 rounds of competition.
The 1st round will be 45 minutes and students will spell words from the National Round Competition Word list.
The 2nd round will be more difficult, and students will spell words form the National Round Challenge Word list for 45 minutes.
If there still isn't a winner after 45 minutes, judges will open the National Round Surprise Word List. There are words that are a secret and students did not study.

What Happens NExt?
The final two competitors will spell until one person spells a word correctly that the other misses. This will determine first and second place. There will be an awards ceremony for all participants and a photo shoot.
Students will attend special events Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and will be given lots of chances to experience cultural exchange and opportunities to practice their English speaking skills!

Why Should we Participate?
Students who participate in the National Round of Competition will get lots of learning opportunities during the competition weekend. They will receive a competition t-shirt, a small gift bag, and all expenses will be paid for. They will receive a certificate declaring their achievement. Students will have stronger vocabularies and will be prepared for tests like TOEFL or EILTS and the National English exam.
Teachers who have winning students will receive small gifts. Teachers will be invited to the competition and receive travel reimbursement.
Teachers will get recognition for their support of student success, and schools with winning students will receive a special certificate for their student’s achievement.
